「通訳」ではなく「コミュニケーションファシリテーター」という新しい働き方 ― 香港出張を通じて感じたこと
今回の香港出張では、金融関係のお仕事のサポートをさせていただきました。
午前中はお客様と一緒にHSBCを訪問し、現地でしか解決できない問題のフォローを行いました。午後は保険会社を訪れ、当初は解約手続きの予定でしたが、担当者から丁寧に仕組みの説明を受け、お客様にもわかりやすくお伝えしました。結果として、一部を解約し、一部はそのまま運用を続けるという最適な形に落ち着きました。
私はこのようなサポートを「通訳」とは呼んでいません。
もちろん英語と日本語の橋渡しをしますが、ただ訳すだけではなく、内容を深く理解した上で、お客様の理解を助けるような＋αの質問を投げかけたり、相手の意図を整理して伝えたりします。
相手の英語が聞き取りづらければ、正直に聞き返しますし、自分の意見も伝えます。その柔軟なスタンスが結果的に良いコミュニケーションにつながると実感しました。
「通訳」という言葉には高いハードルやプレッシャーを感じることがありましたが、「コミュニケーションファシリテーター」という表現は、自分のスタイルを自然に表してくれる言葉です。
ただ言葉をつなぐのではなく、人と人の理解をつなぐ仕事。
今回の香港出張を通じて、その大切さをあらためて感じました。

During my recent business trip to Hong Kong, I had the opportunity to support clients in the financial sector.
In the morning, we visited HSBC Hong Kong to address some issues that required in-person assistance. Later in the afternoon, we visited an insurance company to discuss policy termination. However, after receiving a detailed explanation about the policy structure, I helped my clients understand the options clearly. Eventually, they decided to partially cancel and continue operating the remaining portion.
Although many might call this type of work “interpreting,” I prefer the term communication facilitator.
My role goes beyond simply translating words between English and Japanese. I make sure I understand the content thoroughly, ask additional questions to clarify unclear points, and ensure my clients truly grasp the information. If I don’t catch something in English, I ask again — openly and naturally. This approach allows smoother communication and builds stronger trust among all parties involved.
The term interpreter sometimes feels too rigid and pressuring for me, as it implies perfection in both languages. On the other hand, communication facilitator perfectly describes my approach — connecting not only languages but also understanding between people.
This trip reminded me that genuine communication isn’t just about words; it’s about helping others feel confident and informed. I’m grateful for another meaningful work opportunity in Hong Kong.
